The Ontario Cup, the Provincial Soccer Championship, is the largest Club competition of its kind in Canada. One of the oldest sporting events in the country, the Ontario Cup was first staged in 1901 and has operated continuously, with the exception of the World War II period.
Each year, 12,000 athletes from all across the province compete for the Championship. The competition commences in May, with more than 600 teams drawn into either a Knock-Out round or a Round-Robin style tournament. Host venues are chosen for the Semi-Finals held in August. The cup tournament culminates with the Final Round usually hosted at the Soccer Centre in Vaughan, with the added prize of a National Club Championship in the Under 15's, Under 17's, Men's and Women's divisions.
For the first time ever, our home club of Fort Erie will be hosting a knockout round match on Sunday July 9th at Optimist Park with kick off commencing at 2pm. Our Fort Erie Sting Men’s Premier team, who play out of the Peninsula Soccer League here in Niagara, have won their first round match-up against London LS Croatia SC, earning the honor of hosting their second round match up against Ottawa St. Anthony Futuro Azzurri.
We would like to extend an invite out to all of our membership to come out and support the boys and the club as we host this monumental game match. The club will be putting on a cash only BBQ in support, with music, announcers, etc. occurring throughout the day. We think this will be a great opportunity to have the kids come out and see that a high level of soccer is possible in Fort Erie, and that our club can and will be keeping up with tops clubs in the region and the province going forward! Club Technical Director and Team Head Coach Matt Gill would love to have the teams he works with come out and support his team.
We would like to encourage all teams to come out if possible! This is an amazing opportunity for our club. If coming out, we would like to have all players wearing their team jerseys, coaches wear coaches shirts, and be ready to cheer on the sting! All proceeds of the BBQ will be going back to the club. Players, parents, siblings, coaches, etc. are all welcome.
